In preparation for the United States' 250th anniversary, the White House has ordered a comprehensive review of selected Smithsonian Institution museums and exhibitions. This initiative aims to ensure that the exhibits align with President Donald Trump's vision of American history, emphasising American exceptionalism and avoiding content deemed divisive or overly ideological.
The review, detailed in a letter from top White House officials to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III, focuses on eight major museums, including the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The directive requires these institutions to submit exhibition descriptions and future display drafts within 30 days and implement necessary changes within 120 days.
This move follows President Trump's earlier executive order titled "Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History," which criticised the Smithsonian for promoting a "divisive, race-centered ideology." The administration's goal is to present historically accurate and inclusive representations of U.S. heritage, aligning with the upcoming milestone of the nation's 250th birthday.
Critics have raised concerns that this review could politicise the Smithsonian, potentially compromising its independence and historical integrity. Civil rights leaders, in particular, have expressed apprehension over the focus on the National Museum of African American History and Culture, fearing efforts to downplay Black Americans' historical experiences.
In response, the Smithsonian has affirmed its commitment to scholarly accuracy and rigorous research. The institution has indicated a willingness to engage constructively with the review process, ensuring that the exhibitions continue to reflect the diverse and complex history of the United States.
As the nation approaches its 250th anniversary, this review underscores the ongoing debate over how American history is presented and interpreted in public institutions. The outcome of this initiative may have lasting implications for the Smithsonian's role in shaping the nation's collective memory and understanding of its past.
